Descrizione

A compact itinerary that brings together the works of seventeen Italian artists born between the ’60s and the ’80s, combined with historical works that trace a path through the 20th century. From the great expectations placed in architectural progress in Futurism (the urban scenarios of Antonio Sant’Elia) to the anaemic landscapes of Mario Schifano, and from the new look on the territory offered by Luigi Ghirri’s shots to the dystopian and virtual possibilities of the Superstudio projects.
An illustrious precedent: in 1981-82 at the Gallery of Modern Art (GAM) in Bologna a committee led by Tomás Maldonado organised a project entitled “Paesaggio: immagine e realtà”, a unique milestone from which to make a fresh start.
Defining the landscape is not only an arduous challenge, almost an impossible one, it is first of all a linguistic minefield. Rather than attempting to describe it, one might say that it is the landscape that defines itself, continually updating its identity.
The landscape is nothing more than a point of view capable of containing not only the place (space) and the moment (time) but also the subject of the vision (the observer). It is this peculiarity, perhaps, that makes the landscape at the same time so concrete and so abstract, so tangible and so impalpable, so sharp and so cloudy, so fascinating and so disturbing.
Despite the variety of proposals and techniques, the works collected demonstrate the common need which is still widely felt to investigate the main issues related to the conception of the landscape in the contemporary world: from politics to ecology, and from culture to tourism.
