Questa estate ho iniziato a dipingere fiori, li raccolgo con le radici intorno al mio studio, a Anghiari in Toscana.
Con le radici e la terra viene su anche la guerra.
Dove raccolgo i fiori, inglesi e tedeschi hanno combattuto nell’estate del 1944, per mesi si sono scannati su queste colline.
Hanno lasciato dietro di loro munizioni, scarpe, bombe e morti.
La terra li ha assorbiti, avvolti, arrugginiti.
Quando raccolgo i fiori viene su anche la guerra.

This summer I began painting flowers, picking them up from their roots near my studio in Anghiari, Tuscany.
Along with the roots and the earth, the war emerges, too.
Where I gather flowers, the English and the German fought in the summer of 1944, for months they butchered each other on those hills.
They left behind them ammunition, shoes, bombs, and the dead.
The earth has absorbed them, enrobed them, tarnished them.

Paolo Ventura è nato a Milano nel 1968. Ha studiato all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, dal 1989 al 1991.Il suo lavoro è stato largamente esposto in Italia e all’estero, compresa la 54 Biennale di Venezia. Le sue fotografie fanno parte di prestigiose collezioni pubbliche e private, fra cui Museum of Fine Art, Boston; The Library of Congress, Washington; Maison Europèenne de la Photographie, Parigi; Museo Fortuny, Venezia e il Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Roma MACRO.
Dopo aver vissuto e lavorato per diversi anni a New York, nel 2010 Ventura si trasferisce ad Anghiari, un piccolo paese della Toscana dove attualmente vive e lavora.

Paolo Ventura was born in Milan, Italy in 1968. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, from 1989-1991.
His work has been exhibited worldwide, including at the 54th Venice Biennial and is part of major private and public collections including the Museum of Fine art in Boston, The Library of Congress in Washington, Maison Europèenne de la Photographie in Paris and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome.
After years of living and working in New York, Ventura relocated in 2010 to Anghiari, a small town in Tuscany, where he currently lives and works.
